How I became a coach?

At just 21 years old, I was appointed to a management position at the Tsogo Sun Hotel Group. One of the hardest things for me to deal with was the diversity in culture and the different ways people reacted and responded to leadership.

I was looking for an answer to my challenge that was not necessarily academic, but rather a practical way of managing people and improving communication with team members who were older than me.

It was at this time that Karen Borain introduced me to coaching. I was fascinated by the concept of coaching and started self-learning through online research. There was minimal information and hardly any books available. I embarked upon a personal journey to learn on my own and practice coaching without any formal training.

From that moment (2003) I knew that I wanted to have my own coaching practice. I took my time to learn more about management and executive positions in multiple sectors to be able to understand different leadership styles and dealing with multiple teams.

Events that shaped my coaching style

One of the most challenging and yet fulfilling opportunities that shaped my coaching journey was working for the Government Pensions Administration Agency, the largest state-owned Pension fund in Africa.

I was part of a transformation team that helped reinvent the Special Pension and Military Pension processes. The aim was to ensure the funds would reach the people who were involved in the struggle during the apartheid era in South Africa. I became part of the change management process and started coaching whilst leading my own team. My coaching helped the team review strategy and performance plans and improve processes to ensure a quick turnaround.
